Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (YPB) or Foundation for Sustainable Development was established in line with the spirit of Rio Summit 1992, which has committed to sustainable development. Sustainable development as a new direction of development has included the aspect of social justice and environmental sustainability as well as economic growth. The founders of YPB considered that Indonesia needs to adapt sustainable development as its new development directions to ensure that Indonesia will decent life to its people for the existing generation and the generation to come.
YPB History Period of 1992-2002
In 1992-2002 period YPB had one main program with LEAD network (Leadership for Environment and Development) that promotes sustainable development trhough LEAD Associate Training (LAT). LAT participants are mid career professionals from government agencies, private sector, academic institutions, NGOs, and mass media. LAT was conducted at national, regional and international level for a period of long-term training (50-80 days). In LAT the participants had the opportunity to get the insight of development issues, exchange ideas, had deeper understanding of various country challenges, and to develop network. Those who have completed LAT became LEAD Fellows. In this period LAT was fully supported by Rockefeller Foundation.
Since the establishment of YPB in 1992, MS Kismadi had been the first Executive Director of the institution until he passed away in 2002. In his term YPB has 118 LEAD Indonesian Fellows. With his extensive experience as a lecturer at Faculty of Economy at the University of Indonesia and as an expert for the Ministry of Environment, Kismadi has been acknowledged as a visionary leader who has developed the first environmental policy in the era of Emil Salim as the State Minister of the Environment. His experience has been adapted into YPB where he become a truly education teacher who encouraged young leaders to have the capacity of critical thinking. Despite of his highly intellectual capacity, Kismadi was very well known of a man with sincerity and simplicity. He died during LAT activities in Mexico in 2002, where he was respected by all LEAD network in a deep moved emotion, in his last moment. YPB Beyond 2002: the New Direction The new period of YPB began in 2004 as Darwina Sri Widjajanti become the Executive Director to replace M.Kismadi. With 10 years of YPB existence under M. Kismadi, LEAD network and the support of Rockefeller Foundation, Darwina continues the work and developes a new direction for the future of YPB. The new directions have been the response to the new needs where YPB takes the position as a Resource Center. The center has its strategic program that covers: - LEADing by Sharing (training, consultation, and public discourse)
- LEADing by Knowledge (research, develop case study, and policy recommendations)
- LEADing by Strategic Partnership (to support sustainable development in practice through strategic partnership.
The new program has been approaching more audience, using the tools of analysis, applied sustainability tools that related to sustainable development so that sustainable development is not only considered as a framework but more toward analytical format, that can be applied in daily life. The support from various agencies have enable YPB to implement its program, among others, the support from Ford Foundation, CIDA, Darwin Initiatives, UNIDO, LEAD International, and other contributions as well |
